Ukrainian Woman Stabbed to Death on Charlotte Light Rail August 22, 2025 Charlotte, North Carolina Facts: On August 22, 2025, at around 7:00 p.m., Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian woman who fled to the U.S. to escape war in her country, was stabbed to death while riding the light rail in Charlotteās South End neighborhood. Video from inside the train car showed her sitting in front of 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., who suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed her three times. The stabbing appeared unprovoked, with no interaction between Zarutska and Brown prior to the attack. One stab wound was to the middle of her throat, and she became unresponsive shortly after, bleeding out on the train. Zarutska was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown walked away as she bled, but was found and arrested nearby, with a laceration on his hand that was unclear how it occurred. Brown, who did not know Zarutska, was charged with murder and is being held without bond. He had prior arrests, including for misusing 911, where he claimed someone had implanted āman-madeā material in his body to control him.
